JOURNALING – WITHOUT THE PRESSURE
Welcome to a two 1.5 hours short Journaling course!
This short course will show you all the different journaling techniques, through a brief introduction with your instructor, writer, journalist, poet and ceramicist Ilaria Maria Sala, and a lot of hands-on work.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:
What is journaling?
Journaling can be different things to different people: it can be a full-blown Dear Diary exercise, in which you tell your thoughts and what you did or wish to do to yourself via pen and paper or keyboard and screen. Or it can be a list of impressions, of desires, of moments that meant something important, of random observations, of goals and wishes, of fantasies. We will look into these more word-oriented forms of journaling in our first session, and use a few prompts and games to get started. Journaling, however, can also be a scribbling or collaging or colouring habit, that you add to your words or that you pursue by itself – a different way of grounding your thoughts which we will explore in detail in our second session: Asemic Journaling.
Why should you give it a try?
Journaling can be a form of meditation, for those who find meditation a bit too involved, or for those who wish to have something to add to their mental health and creativity toolbox. Journaling allows you to gain more clarity over what you would like to attract in your life (ever tried making a Vision Board, just to find out that the vision part was a bit blurry?) and what you are ready to say goodbye to. The simple act of sitting with your thoughts, and confiding them to the paper in front of you, can be of great help in processing through difficult emotions, and in getting rid of thoughts that repeat themselves in a loop without any resolution. Asemic journaling helps out in and of itself if you find that to be a more congenial way of expression, or each and every time that even words are too much. These are all very personal exercises in which you suspend judgment over yourself (please) and just let it all flow onto the paper, leaving you with a deeper understanding about yourself, about the issues that you may be struggling with, and the need to stop for a little bit and just be.
Who is your instructor?
Ilaria Maria Sala is an award winning writer and journalist, and a poet and a ceramic maker. She has been keeping a journal since she was 7 years of age, in various different forms – on occasion, more than one at a time. She is the author of four books (in Italian) and has had her work published in The New York Times, The Guardian, Quartz, The Art Newspaper and, here in Hong Kong, in Zolima, the South China Morning Post and Hong Kong Free Press. Her poetry has appeared on Asian Cha, A-minor Magazine, Voice and Verse and other publications. Some of her writings has been translated into Chinese, Italian and Swedish, and she speaks about nine or ten languages, to varying degrees of fluency. She has been practicing ceramics for about 15 years, cooks vegan and makes her own clothes.
